Total spending on pet products and services reached $38.5 billion in 2006, growing at a compounded annual rate of 6% from $28.5 billion in 2001.  It is estimated that spending will reach $40.8 billion in 2007 and the APPMA estimates that over $50 billion will be spent on pets, including all pet-related products by 2010.  Over the past five years, veterinary care industry in the US has grown at a compounded annual rate of 7% to $9.2 billion. This growth should continue, reaching $12.1 billion by 2010.  Pet food spending reached $15.4 billion in 2006 from $13.3 billion in 2003, an increase of 16%. It is believed that both unit volume and average selling prices increased in the food category over the past five years as pet owners have traded up to premium and ultra-premium food brands.

As a percentage of total sales, spending on veterinary care increased, reaching 24% of total sales in 2006 from 22% in 2003. Spending on supplies and over-the-counter (OTC) medications grew 15%, reaching $9.3 billion in sales in 2006 (from $8.1 billion in 2003). Pet service revenue (including grooming and boarding) reached $2.7 billion in 2006, up 4% from $2.6 billion in 2003.
